Ranting: Persuasive Writing and Speaking

Grade Level: Grade 9

Task: Modelling Rick Mercer’s ranting style, grade 9 students were tasked with writing a short persuasive speech, ranging from 45-90 seconds, about a topic of their choosing. Students were expected to demonstrate proficiency in language arts by using vivid imagery and persuasive techniques around their topic in order to engage a live audience. The teachers ensured that formative assessment was woven into the task design throughout the process. Evidence of student understanding was gathered in a variety of ways in order to help students determine their next steps, as well as inform next teaching steps.
