Grade Level: High School
School Board: Calgary Board of Education
On the very first day of this teacher’s class, students are engaged in problem solving on whiteboards in small groups. The knowledge building learning environment that these students are invited into creates a deep understanding of how they are active participants in their own learning and clear expectations for students to self regulate and work collaboratively. The problems around linear relationships are intentionally designed to scaffold the learner and introduce the first concept of study, quadratics. The learning of students is clearly visible to themselves, the teacher and their peers . This classroom environment provides a great example of how a teacher can support and identify student gaps and quickly recognize next steps for teaching.
