Why Plants Give Us Medicine by Bryce
I remember the time you told me about medicine. First animals and people lived together in peace. People got too greedy and the animals got tired of people. So they had a council. The animals decided that there was too many bad people. People took more than they needed. They killed animals just for fun. The animals wanted to learn how they killed. So they sent Coyote into their village.
Coyote saw that they had bows and arrows. Coyote watched how they made bows. He came back to the animals and told them. The animals made bows and arrows. But then they realized they couldn’t use them. They couldn’t use them because they were four legged. So the animals called on the invisibles. The invisibles are disease. The invisibles said, “Yes, yes we can kill people,” but the plants said, “No”. They said they wanted to see babies grow to old men and then they would make up their decision.
So 100 years went by and the plants made their decision. They decided that the people took too much and they were deserving of death. Not all the people, the plants said. The plants said they would give medicine to the good people. They would give their lives to give medicine to those who were kind and respectful. That is how medicine came to our people.
