Student Learning Task:
You are a member of a transplant team. It has been determined that your patient has had a major organ failure due to a disease and that treatment or a transplant is necessary. A number of patient profiles have been created for you and you may select from one of them or you may choose to create your own patient profile. (The following organs are appropriate: heart, lungs, liver, kidney, intestine, larynx, blood vessels. Exceptions include: nerves, hand, skin, cornea, bone and marrow.) Your team has been selected to determine the cause of the organ failure, select a new organ, and transplant the new organ. |
Before your team can proceed with treatment you must create a multimedia presentation that:
describes how the patient's disease impacts her/his quality of life |
clearly shows the affected organ. You may find some of the graphics and/or 3-D modeling software suitable for creating and manipulating a model of the organ during your presentation. Make sure you label your model. |
shows where the organ is situated in the body |
clearly demonstrates and explains the organ's function in supporting life |
clearly describes and demonstrates the organ's relationship to surrounding organ systems |
clearly describes and details how this affected organ effects the rest of the body. Make sure that you can clearly articulate this point in your presentation. |
clearly shows your understanding of the role of the immune system in pathogen protection |
provides an understanding of how organ transplantation can threaten equilibrium (i.e. use of immuno-suppressant drugs) |
educates others about the ethical and physiological issues involved in transplants |
provides evidence to show that you have fully researched and examined all the different treatment or transplant options open to you and provides justification of your selection. |
looks at some of the current, ongoing research (Human Genome Project, Cloning, etc.) and speculate on how this research might assist organ transplant or treatment developments in the future |
describes the dilemmas and issues that you dealt with in selecting a suitable treatment or organ for your patient |
shows that you have considered the perspectives of the donor’s family, donor’s lifestyle, and the recipient's lifestyle. What are the implications of treatment or organ transplantation on society? |
provides a reference list of the resources you have used |
