"Into the land of the Cong."
"Johnson, who had had machine-gun training, got an M60 ... Johnson signed for it, took it by the handle, and walked away without even looking at it. They fit each other."
"Now you can get up and start beating on me if you want, but if you do I’m going to cut your damn throat soon’s you go to sleep.” (Peewee)
“I swore I thought I saw some Congs dragging a guy through the bushes, I saw it just as plain as anything.” (Monaco)

"I knew mama loved me, but I also knew when I got back, she would expect me to be the same person, but it could never happen.

She hadn’t been to Nam. She hadn’t given her poncho to anybody to wrap a body in, or stepped over a dying kid.” Richie Perry

Peewee had a girlfriend back in the world that, one day, he was going to marry. He finds out that she already married someone else.

Peewee is distraught but hides his feelings and contends with them by telling Perry to write a letter to his lost love.

Peewee was shocked to learn that the Company Perry went into shot and killed their own people.

He could not understand why it happened.
