Spoken Word

Task

Over the past several years, “Spoken Word” has become an increasingly popular means of expression.  Wanting to engage students in an authentic writing and performance task, this teacher invited her Grade 9 students to become Spoken Work Poets. Through intentional design of the task and effective teaching practices, she was able to guide her students as they delved into the process of writing powerful poems that were then performed in front of a live audience.
