Grade Level: Middle School and High School
School Board: Calgary Board of Education
Breaking down the barriers of the classroom and inviting outside experts in allowed this group of grade 9 students to develop a deeper understanding of Canada’s youth justice system. Students were tasked with creating a case, for either the prosecution or defense, regarding a real-life scenario that had been presented to them. Through extensive research, collaboration, and connecting with experts, students were able to successful construct a viable case for their clients. Their culminating task was a simulated court case where they had to present their evidence and arguments to a judge. This process helped students to forge strong connections beyond the school as well as to the curriculum.
