At Glendale Elementary School in Calgary, students in each grade get an interesting monthly assignment:
Using materials found in the school gym, they plan and then create their own playground.
Gym mats are used as mazes, new sports and games are invented, and the “host” students welcome the entire school to the gym, acting as spotters and showing them how to play in their new designs.
This activity not only encourages group cooperation, it promotes rough and tumble play in a safe environment.
