In this paper, we explore professional learning designed to prepare aspiring and developing school leaders with principled practical knowledge and adaptive expertise for student-centred leadership. A study involving a group of mid-level learning leaders participating in a design-based professional learning series was used to inform the type of learning needed for school leaders to lead school improvement and activate teachers’ learning for improved student learning. Findings reveal design-based professional learning involving mid-level leaders can influence school improvements focused on improving student achievement, engagement, and well-being with attention to design principles informing teaching effectiveness.
