Snazzy Triangle

Category: Number Operations and Variables & Equations
Suitable for Grade Level: Elementary

The Math in this Problem:

Snazzy Triangle is a simple test on the basic understanding of arithmetic operations. In this investigation, students will work with the numbers 1 through 6 and arrange them on a 6-unit triangle. The order of these numbers will have to be precise so that the sums of each side are equivalent to the numbers that students are presented with.

There is a number 6 on the tip of the triangle. Arrange the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 such that the sum of each side of the triangle is 12.

Extensions:

  • Rearrange the numbers 1 through 6 so that the sum of each side of the triangle is 9.
  • Rearrange the numbers 1 through 6 so that the sum of each side of the triangle is 10.
  • What other numbers is it possible for the three sides to sum to by rearranging the numbers 1 through 6?
